Samsung Galaxy A8 Star to shine in India

Samsung announced the Galaxy A9 Star in China, later rebranded and launched as Galaxy A8 Star in the Philippines. The phone with dual rear cameras on the side and a square fingerprint scanner in the middle of the panel is now arriving in India, according to an Amazon teaser.

The phone is listed as Samsung Star, but likely will adopt the Galaxy moniker once everything is cleared out. Amazon emphasized on the dual cameras that “shines day and night,” most likely because of the wide-open f/1.7 aperture of the 16 MP + 24 MP vertical setup.
Coming with a 3,700 mAh battery, the Galaxy A8 Star is said to be “always alive.” The capacity is way above average for Samsung smartphones, but you might have trouble quick-charging it if it stays with QC 2.0 like the flagship Galaxy Note9. Other specs include Snapdragon 660 chipset, 6.3” Super AMOLED screen, and a 24 MP f/2.0 selfie shooter.

Amazon says the upcoming phone is “shining soon,” without clarifying any exact launch dates. At least the price is known to be in the INR30,000s, which means the Galaxy A8 Star will be offered in India for no less than $430/€373.

Developers can now verify mobile app users over WhatsApp instead of SMS

Facebook today released a new SDK that allows mobile app developers to integrate WhatsApp verification into Account Kit for iOS and Android. This will allow developers to build apps where users can opt to receive their verification codes through the WhatsApp app installed on their phone instead of through SMS. Today, many apps give users the ability to sign up using only a phone number — a now popular alternative to Facebook Login, thanks to the social network’s numerous privacy scandals that led to fewer people choosing to use Facebook with third-party apps. Plus, using phone numbers to sign up is common with a younger generation of users who don’t have Facebook accounts — and sometimes barely use email, except for joining apps and services. When using a phone number to sign in, it’s common for the app to confirm the user by sending a verification code over SMS to the number provided. The user then enters that code to create their account. This process can also be used when ...
