Microsoft is now more valuable than Google

Third most valuable company behind Apple and Amazon Microsoft has passed Google (Alphabet) in market valuation for the first time in three years, reports  CNBC . Microsoft is now valued at $753 billion, while Alphabet (Google’s parent company) is valued at $739 billion. It makes Microsoft the third most valuable company in the world, behind Apple and Amazon. This will likely only be temporary, though. Google originally passed Microsoft back in 2012, and the pair have traded positions a number of times in recent years. Still, it shows how much Microsoft has improved its stock price over the past five years since former CEO Steve Ballmer announced his plans to retire as Microsoft CEO. Microsoft’s stock price has more than doubled since CEO Satya Nadella took over four years ago. Nadella has refocused Microsoft on cross-platform technologies, the cloud, artificial intelligence, and wants to secure the future of quantum computing and mixed reality h...

Bill Gates says US will have another financial crisis similar to 2008

Many economists consider the financial crisis of 2008 to be the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. According to  Bill Gates , the US is heading toward another one just like it. On Tuesday, the  Microsoft  founder held an “Ask Me Anything” event on Reddit. When a user asked, “Do you think in the near future, we will have another financial crisis similar to the one in 2008?” Gates replied with a stern – but still optimistic – warning. “Yes. It is hard to say when but this is a certainty,” Gates said. “Fortunately we got through that one reasonably well. Gates then deferred to his friend and fellow billionaire philanthropist  Warren Buffett , saying, “Warren has talked about this and he understands this area far better than I do.” The 2008 crisis led to the Great  Recession , which saw 8.8 million jobs lost. The net worth of households across the US fell by more than $19 trillion, and the number of homeless families increased. Gates ...

Microsoft unveils $200 Windows 10 laptops for schools

Microsoft is taking the fight to Chromebooks with a selection of new sub-$200 laptops and sub-$300 convertible PCs. They come with Windows 10 and are loaded with free software to aid in your studies. The Lenovo 100e will cost just $190 and is powered by an Intel Celeron (Apollo Lake). The company also has the 300e, a $280 convertible with pen support. The Trigono V401 convertible ($300) supports both touch and pen input while the Classmate Leap T303 laptop ($200) features the added security of Windows Hello. You’re probably wondering about screen resolution, RAM, storage and so on (we are too). The HP Stream 11 Pro G4 EE (which is also a part of the lineup) has an HD screen, 4GB of RAM and 64GB eMMC storage, which we think is a good guideline of the type of hardware on offer. That said, the software alone could be worth more than $200. There’s Windows 10 for one (though some of these will run 10 S), but also Office 365 with OneNote and Teams. This will make writin...
