Jeff Bezos is launching a new conference dedicated to AI, optimism, and Amazon

The event is an extension of Amazon’s semi-secret MARS conference, but will include plenty of self-promotion For the last couple of years, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has held an annual  invite-only event  where billionaires, astronauts, and roboticists could rub shoulders and chat about the future of tech over gourmet nibbles. Now that event is being turned into a  public conference  — one that “embraces an optimistic vision for scientific discovery” and will feature demos, workshops and talks about machine learning and space exploration. “We’re at the beginning of a golden age of AI,” said Bezos in a press statement. “Recent advancements have already led to invention that previously lived in the realm of science fiction — and we’ve only scratched the surface of what’s possible.” The new event will be held in Las Vegas between June 4th and 7th later this year. The earlier, semi-secret conference was known as MARS (standing for Machine learning, Automatio...

Apple’s 2019 AirPods Could Have Serious Competition from Google And Amazon

The latest patent filing suggests Apple is betting big on health tracking features as the next big evolution for the AirPods. Perhaps conspicuous by their absence on the update calendar for this year, there are great expectations that Apple will update the wireless earphones in 2019. The latest patent filing by the company suggests that the next update for the AirPods will bring in a lot more features. The patent filing suggests that there will be a slight redesign of the earbuds, and the buds will now be compatible with either ear—at present, there are designated ones for the left and the right ears. There will be a bendable band, optional perhaps, to securely lock in the earphones when you are wearing them. There is also a belief that the new AirPods buds will have biometric sensors built-in. These would be very handy for health tracking, such as monitoring the heart rate, blood volume, respiratory rate, body temperature and more.  It would be interesting to see if Apple...

No more 'No questions asked': Amazon will ban you permanently if you return too many items

Till now, Amazon's policy spared the customer disputes with couriers, sellers and manufacturers over defective or unsuitable goods. But not anymore. One reason online retailers such as  Amazon  have been able to pull customers from brick-and-mortar stores is the 'no questions asked' return policy. Anyone can return an item within 30 days without having to give an explanation. This policy spared the customer disputes with couriers, sellers and manufacturers over defective or unsuitable goods. But not anymore. Amazon USA    has started quizzing customers over returned items and has even banned accounts from which even 10% of ordered items were returned, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. A number of customers have shared their experience on Twitter. A customer tweeted a letter she got from Amazon, asking her to explain why she had returned so many items in the past 12 months. She said she purchased 50 things and returned only six which coul...

Walmart may be in pole position ahead of Amazon to buy Flipkart

By Bloomberg SoftBank Group, Flipkart’s largest shareholder, may prefer a sale to Amazon in part because of its success in cracking open the ecommerce business, one of the people said.             Walmart looks likely to take the next round in the battle for India’s retail market over rival  Amazon .com. Amazon patents wristbands that track warehouse employees’ hands in real time

Image: via Amazon upso Amazon has been granted a pair of patents for a wristband that can pinpoint the location of warehouse employees and track their hand movements in real time. The patents,  first spotted by  GeekWire , describe an inventory management system comprised of trackers and receivers used to monitor workers’ performance. The  original patents  were both filed back in 2016 but were granted on January 30th. The proposed system includes ultrasonic devices placed around the warehouse, the wristbands themselves, and a management module that oversees everything. The wristbands also feature an ultrasonic unit that’s used to track where the worker is in relation to any particular inventory bin. If their hands are moving to the wrong item, the bracelet will buzz. Image: Amazon via uspo While the patent describes this tech as a time-saving system, tracking workers in this way seems dystopian.
