Qualcomm unveils first mmWave 5G antennas for smartphones

There’s a lot of pieces that need to come together to get 5G networks to work on mobile devices — new standards need to be agreed on, new modems need to be developed6, and new networking hardware for towers needs to be rolled out. But Qualcomm might have just cleared one of the major hurdles with the announcement of its new QTM052 mmWave antenna modules, the first that have been announced that will enable the high-speed swath of networking spectrum to work with mobile phones.
That’s a big deal, because not all 5G is created equal. As Qualcomm’s own simulated test results from MWC earlier this year showed, users will already get big jumps in speed with lower-bandwidth 5G solutions, but the truly impressive leap forward will come from the mmWave network.
But in order for that to work, we first need viable mmWave hardware for phones, which isn’t easy. While the mmWave portion of the spectrum offers dramatically faster speeds, it also transmits at a much shorter range and is far more easily blocked by things like walls and even users’ hands held over their devices.

But Qualcomm claims that its QTM052 antenna is the solution. It’s a tiny antenna array, roughly the size of a penny, that features four antennas that can (with the help of Qualcomm’s algorithms) accurately point toward the nearest 5G tower. It can even bounce signals off of surrounding surfaces. The QTM052 is designed to be small enough that device manufacturers will be able to embed it into the bezel of a phone. Qualcomm’s X50 5G modem is already designed to support up to four of the antenna arrays, one for each side of the phone, allowing for 16 total antennas and ensuring that no matter how you hold your phone, the signal won’t get blocked.

It’s a clever solution, assuming it performs as promised in the field. It would also be a potentially big leap forward for the goal of actually developing fast, mmWave-capable 5G devices. But presumably we won’t have long to wait to find out: Qualcomm says that the first devices with the QTM052 antennas should be launching as early as the beginning of 2019 — and hopefully, there’ll be some actual 5G networks to use them with by then.

Aircel, country's last small mobile phone operator, go for bankruptcy

Aircel , the debt-ridden  mobile  service provider, and its two units filed for bankruptcy in the National Company Law Tribunal, underscoring the struggles of India’s smaller telcos in a brutally competitive market amid a crackdown on large loan defaulters. Detailed talks with lenders and shareholders failed to yield a consensus on restructuring Rs 15,500 crore of debt and getting funding, leaving resolution under the Insolvency & Bankruptcy Code, 2016, as the only option, Aircel said in a statement on Wednesday. Aircel’s decision to move the  NCLT  was spurred by the Reserve Bank of India’s decision to scrap debt revamp schemes in favour of the Insolvency & Bankruptcy Code. “No agreement could be reached. Under current circumstances, especially after the 12 February 2018 RBI guidelines, the company believes resolution process under the Code is an appropriate recourse,” the company, majority-owned by Malaysia’s  Maxis , said in the statement. The Oreo Beta of the  Xiaomi Mi A1  is 1104 MB in size, and according to an early adopter makes the fingerprint reader on the back is a bit faster. Apparently, the dual-SIM feature is not entirely flawless in this early edition, though. The tests should end soon as  Xiaomi promised that the Mi A1 Oreo stable update will arrive before the end of 2017.
